Restoration of the Birdcage Bandstand, Brighton Seafront

Client: Brighton & Hove City Council

Completion Date: July 2010

Design of the landscaped areas surrounding the Bandstand.

Brighton & Hove's historic seafront bandstand re-opened in summer 2009, having undergone a major restoration project to return the building to its Victorian splendour. The deck of the bandstand is used for regular concerts, whilst the base of the building has been converted into a café with an al fresco area. The bandstand is also licensed for marriages and civil partnerships.

In 2008 Fiona was commissioned by Brighton and Hove Council to design the landscaping associated with the restoration project. Previously the structure and the land immediately surrounding it had fallen into disrepair and were extremely dilapidated. Inspiration for the design was taken from historic plans and materials were chosen to integrate with the surrounding landscaping.

The project also included the re surfacing of the area immediately west of the bandstand which contains a collection of stone and mosaic ‘pods’ by artist Jane Fordham.

Architects for this project were abir architects.
